I was fortunate to stumble across an interview with someone I admire greatly. Dr. Gabor Maté is a Canadian Doctor who works in the addiction sector. In this particular interview, he discussed perception and emotional response. As he mentioned, the typical response in Western civilizations, is "Panic! Everything is out of control! The Buddhists response, however, is "Relax. Everything is out of control." This is a major shift in perception and one which, I believe, many will struggle with. However, once we adjust our perception, we experience a shift. You can read more about Dr. Gabor and his work around addiction HERE.
And will you accept that shift, or fight to hang on to the previous paradigm? These times are indeed a protracted teaching moment. During Covid-19, there is a golden opportunity to clarify our values and re-calibrate our lifestyle and our goals, both near and long term.
Now, this is easier said than done when many of us feel the crushing weight of financial responsibility, the physical distance from friends and family and the fear of the unknown. There is an old saying, "how do you eat an elephant? The answer: one bite at a time." Change in perception and evolution of values can occur even in small increments or bites, without a conscious effort.
Take heart! As we work hard to keep those lines of communication open, something miraculous is occurring. By slowing down and creating that space, we subconsciously re-focus our energy on what may have fallen by the way side in the bustle of our too-full lives. Let's do our best to welcome that shift with all of the joys and freshness it brings.
Sending you all a virtual hug, N.
